Doors

Standard and not-so-large doorways

Most often, a standard doorway is equipped in the construction of residential and public buildings, but before buying a new interior or entrance door, its dimensions should be correctly measured. Otherwise, the additional costs of re-equipping the opening or changing the size of the door cannot be avoided.

What dimensions do standard doorways have?

Modern manufacturers offer the following standard sizes of doorways and door types:

The most common type of door leaf with a height of 2000 mm. With this parameter, the width can be 600, 700 or 800 mm. Finished products with a parameter of 1900 cm in height and a width of 550 mm are often found on sale. The thickness of the box can be a wound of 15-50 mm.

GOST of the dimensions of the opening 6629-88 contains the following information:

What to consider when installing the canvas in a standard opening?

When installing doors, it is mandatory to take into account not only the standard dimensions of the canvas, frame and opening. Other factors are of great importance:

  • whether communications pass within the opening,
  • Do I need to equip a frame for a wall or plasterboard casing,
  • accurate indicator of wall thickness,
  • how wide will the platband be required,
  • Is there a need to set a threshold and its height.

Doorway standards are essential for simplified door and frame selection. Typical products are easily mounted in standardized openings. In the case of building a house on an individual project, the width and height of the doorway between the rooms will be non-standard. To do this, you need to order the manufacture of a door and a box for it according to individual sizes. Moreover, the accuracy and correctness of measuring the dimensions of the openings is important. Correctly take measurements according to the following algorithm.

How to calculate the dimensions of the opening?

In some cases, it becomes necessary to calculate the size of the doorway for the specific dimensions of the interior or entrance door leaf. Then it will be necessary to make certain calculations. For example, you plan to install a canvas with dimensions of 2000 × 800 mm with a door frame thickness of 25 mm. The opening width in this case will be equal to:

800 + 25 + 25 = 850 (mm).

Both horizontal pillars of the door frame are taken into account in the calculations, so the indicator is added twice.

The calculation also takes into account clearances for mounting 15-20 mm, which should be left on both sides of the door. To the previously obtained value we add these values:

850 + 15 + 15 = 880 (mm).

The indicator of 800 mm is the standard width of the doorway, which is most often used in the manufacture of interior products that perfectly fit into the conditions of standard buildings.

The height of the doorway is calculated by analogy, based on the dimensions of the threshold and the size of the clearances for installation. Thus, the height of the canvas is summed up with the thickness of the box, the height of the threshold and the size of the gap (10-20 mm):

2000 + 25 + 10 + 15 = 2050 (mm).

As a result of the calculations, we get that for a web with dimensions of 2000 × 800 mm, a standard doorway of 2050 × 880 mm is required.

The standard thickness of typical openings in residential and public buildings, regardless of the material of the walls, is 75 mm. Accordingly, most door frames on the market have the same thickness. If the size recommendations are not followed, you may encounter problems with the installation of platbands and the unaesthetic appearance of the door.

Standard sizes

If you initially equip the standard size of the doorway in the wall, in the future there will be no problems with the choice of a new block. It is important to consider that domestic and foreign standards are different. The difference is small, but it is better to determine the model in advance so as not to reduce or expand the entrance to the room.

The size of the opening is always larger than the dimensions of the sash. When calculating, the thickness of the box is taken into account, which according to the standard varies from 15 to 40 mm. For each room, the typical size of the door block is used:

  • For combined a bathroom as well as separate bathtubs and toilet the entrance is equipped with a height of 1.9–2 m, a width of 550 or 600 mm. Depth is from 50 to 70 mm.
  • For the kitchen the optimum canvas dimension is 2 * 0.7 m. The passage is made with a depth of 70 mm.
  • IN the bedroom a block - 2 * 0.8 m is suitable. Depth equip within 70-200 mm.
  • IN Hall bivalve structures with an increased width of up to 1.2 m are often installed. Two wings are placed with a width of 600 mm. A variant of one latching half - 400 mm and a working main canvas - 800 mm is possible.

When arranging the passage in the interior partition, it must be taken into account that its size and even depth will change after the walls are aligned with plaster or drywall.

Width

The most running width of a single-leaf door is 60, 70, 80 cm. Blades 40, 55, 90 cm wide are less popular. However, such dimensions also comply with the standard and are sometimes in demand.

For sliding systems according to domestic standard there are minimum as well as maximum restrictions. The width of the canvas varies in the range from 60 to 120 cm.

For each standard door, the opening width is calculated taking into account the thickness of the frame. Additionally, the gaps necessary for the free opening of the sash, as well as the correct installation of the door frame, are taken into account. For example, if a canvas of 80 cm is selected, then the width of the passage will be 88.6 cm.

Height

A common domestic standard for leaf height is 2 m. Less often, doors are 1.9 m and 1.8 m high, they are less in demand.

The calculation of the height of the doorway similarly takes into account the gaps. However, they also provide for a threshold. For example, for a two-meter sash with a frame thickness of 3 cm, the opening height should be 278 cm. If there is no threshold, one thickness is removed - 3 cm. The indicator decreases to 248 cm.

The standard height is 2 m. Sometimes the manufacturer increases the parameter to 2.5 m. When calculating the height of the opening for a sliding door, a technological gap between the ends of the sheet and the upper and lower edges of the doorway are likewise provided. Additionally take into account the thickness of the elements of the sliding system, performing the role of the frame.

Thickness

Most of all standard boxes are produced with a thickness of 7.5 cm. The value is due to the parameters of the interior partitions. If the door frame is installed in a thick wall, extras are additionally used. It is more difficult to solve the problem with a thin partition. So that the box does not protrude from the wall, the frame will have to be cut or a part removed with a planer.

The thickness of the passage is measured at a minimum of three points. If the wall goes obliquely and is thicker than the box, additional use is made. The bar is cut with a wedge. Platbands on all sides should be pressed tightly against the wall, regardless of flaws.

In the article we raise the question of the correct dimensions of doorways and how to measure the doors yourself.

Do not want to overpay for additional work or non-standard doors? Welcome.

Before proceeding to the decoration of walls and floors, you must understand that any, including painted interior interior doors from solid wood is an essential element of any interior and you still have to buy and install them! In order not to buy non-standard interior doors, which, as a rule, are 20-50% more expensive, it is necessary to determine the size of the doorway. The first thing you have to do is to stop looking at the variety of interior doors and their manufacturers. The bulk of the interior and exterior doors are of standard size: height 2000 mm. width 600, 700, 800 mm. Some door manufacturers offer a standard width of 400, 550 mm with a height of 1900 mm., And consider a standard width of 900 mm. At the same time, the thickness of the door frames in a quarter varies from 15 mm to 40 mm. All this is very important when calculating the size of the opening for a future interior door. If you do not attach importance to the importance of these sizes, you may encounter a problem when the interior door with a frame (door block) does not fit into the doorway in the load-bearing wall, as a result of the expansion of the opening, which in some cases is impossible in principle due to the peculiarities of the wall design and floor plans. The expansion of the drywall doorway can also deliver a lot of difficulties associated with the transfer of metal profiles. The only option is the custom sizes of interior doors, and this is a significant overpayment. Or vice versa, the doorway is too large, which needs to be narrowed, for which you will additionally pay for most organizations for which installation of interior doors in St. Petersburg (https://ploskostspb.ru) the main activity profile. The most unpleasant thing that can happen in this case is when, as a result of all the modifications of the doorways, it turns out that the installed wooden platband does not cover the opening in width or height, which means that the repair will have to be completed (gluing wallpaper, painting or reporting tiles). It is very difficult to call the master to such a small and sometimes jewelry volume of work. For a general example, you can see prices for installing interior doors and additional work in St. Petersburg, specialized organizations.

In order not to encounter a situation where the walls and openings will have to be finished, or custom designs ordered, prepare for installation in advance, even at the rough finishing stage.

When calculating the size of the doorway, you need to know:

  • width and height of the desired door leaf
  • door frame thickness
  • box width
  • width of wooden platbands
  • the presence or absence of a wooden threshold
  • what decorative elements does the manufacturer offer

Suppose you need a door leaf of 2000 * 800 mm. whose quarter thickness is 25 mm. To calculate the size of the doorway, it is necessary to add the thickness of the wooden box to the width of the interior door, which will be on both sides of the canvas, and take into account the necessary mounting gap between the interior door and the frame, the door unit and the wall opening (minimum 10, maximum 20 mm on each side ) The formula for the size of the doorway in the wall, with a wooden frame 25 mm thick., Looks like 800 + 25 + 25 + 15 + 15 = 880 mm; this is almost the ideal width of the doorway, which will fit 90% of door manufacturers. Doors from an array of valuable wood species, as a rule, have thicker frames, therefore for them the width of the opening will be + 20 cm to the calculation (900 mm). The height is calculated by analogy (taking into account the threshold = thickness of the box or the gap between the floor and the door = from 10 to 20 mm) 2000 + 25 + 10 + 15 = 2050 (2080 for solid doors or MDF painted) - without threshold and 2000+ 25 + 25 + 15 + 15 = 2080 mm. for doors with a threshold, this is the ideal height of the doorway that will fit 90% of door manufacturers, including solid wood!

And so, with the dimensions of the blade 2000 * 800 your aperture: 2080 * 880 and 2080 * 900 - for doors made of solid wood. With a width of 600,700, 900 mm, it is necessary to proportionally narrow or increase the size of the doorway.

Along with the height and width of the doorway there is its thickness. In standard, model houses from the USSR, the thickness corresponds to 75/80 mm. Most manufacturers thus offer door frames 75/80 mm thick in the market. and in preparing the opening, this fact must be taken into account. If the features of the walls do not allow me to withstand this size (the thickness is less or more than 75 mm.), The question will arise about the need to install a box expander (extension, slope) or sawed off the boxes along if the wall is smaller than the box. Without the installation of a dobra or sawed-off door frames, in most cases, the installation of a platband will become impossible or this will lead to a significant deterioration in the appearance of the final product (installed door). Installing the extension, as well as reducing the width of the door frames, will increase the cost of installing interior doors. We recommend in this case, accurately measure the wall thickness at least three points on each side and, if this thickness is the same along the perimeter of the opening (which is very important), try to order non-standard frames for interior doors, if any, offered by the manufacturer. If the thickness of the walls of the opening is not the same and varies from 3 to 30 mm. it still makes sense to cut the boxes or put an option, since it is possible to cut the box or add "on a wedge", taking into account the curvature of the walls and press the platband to the wall as much as possible.

An ideal doorway is an opening that is 80 mm wider and higher than the door leaf (100 mm / width and 80 mm / height - solid), and whose wall thickness is 75/80 mm!

Aperture size for solid wood doors

with web dimensions 600 * 2000 mm:

In 99% of cases, any interior door is suitable for these doorways. Even if minor improvements occur during the installation process, they will not entail a deterioration in the appearance of the product or the quality of work performed, and will not lead to a significant increase in the cost of the final product (a significant increase in price by more than 15%)!

Aperture

Before talking directly about the doors, we decide on general concepts. One of them, the size of the opening for interior doors, is used in cases where it is a construction opening or a passage in the wall where this door will be inserted. In addition, the dimensional characteristics (height and width) there are three more indicators shown in the figure.

Doorway in the light, or doorway - the dimensions of free space for the passage or movement of objects. It is smaller than the size of the door leaf to the height of the sinus where it enters. In the future, the term “aperture” will mean construction

Why should the opening be larger than the door with a box (frame, jamb, loot)

  1. The opening is needed for strictly vertical installation of the box. Although GOST prescribes the dimensions of doorways specifically, not all walkways are completely sheer and square, and the floors are even. With extra space, you can ideally install or align the door.
  2. Not all doors are the same size. They may vary by manufacturer. Usually this is not so much. But if the opening is left exactly to the size of the door with the box, it will be impossible to expose the door without having room for adjustment.
  3. It is necessary to leave space for the expansion and contraction of the wall. Yes, the wall becomes larger and smaller as the seasons change. It absorbs moisture when it is wet outside, and contracts when temperature and humidity drop. We are talking about small sizes: 1.5 - 2 mm. But this will be enough so that the perfectly fitted door does not begin to wedge, rub the jamb one fine morning, and the lock or latch does not lock properly.

The adjoining of the box to the walls is decorated with a platband, so there is no need to fear that an too large opening will be noticeable.

How to measure

The passage at the installation location of the door frame is measured in various places.

  • Between the walls horizontally above, in the middle, below.
  • Vertically in the right, left upper corners to the floor, in the middle.

From vertical and horizontal sizes smaller ones are chosen. The door block will be selected along them. Very roughly, for an estimate, its size is defined as follows: minimum width / height of the opening minus 10 cm.

Standard Solutions

The doorway is prepared long before a piano or an antique cabinet is brought in through the door installed in it. Therefore, for each type of room, recommendations were developed on the size of the openings corresponding to the width of the selected type of door.

Hinges are selected due to ease of installation. Canvases for them can be matched to any design or architectural style, they can be deaf, with simple or stained glass. This also applies to platbands: they are made in the same style with a box and canvas. The materials from which the door elements are made are also diverse.

Products with the indicated height / width in mm are suitable for installation in standard openings. Interior doors - the dimensions with the box are standard, from the table, minus 43 mm in height and 65 mm in width. For access to the living room: 2000/800, kitchen: 2000/700, bathroom and toilet: 1900, 2000/550, 600. In large living rooms, single-wing with a width of 900 mm or double-wing doors of 2000/1200 are recommended.

You can independently calculate the opening depending on the size of the door leaf like this.

  • Width. To the width of the canvas (60 cm) it is necessary to add the thickness of the block on both sides: 25 mm x 2 = 50 mm. Mounting clearance: 12 - 15 mm x 2 = 24 - 30 mm. Result: 67.4 - 68 cm.
  • Height. To the height of the web (200cm) we add one thickness of the box (25 mm) and the mounting gap (20 mm). Result: 245 mm.

The calculation in the reverse order for the existing opening will allow you to determine the required dimensions of the door block.

An online calculator for calculating the opening will help verify the correctness of the calculations.

General recommendations for the design and decoration of openings

The observance of simple rules largely determines the overall appearance of the future door.

  • The opening should not adjoin the adjacent wall. The minimum distance to it is 100 mm.
  • It should always be a little wider: the rule + 100 mm to the size of the box justifies itself. Narrowing an opening is always easier than expanding it.
  • The doors to the opening are installed last, after the completion of all finishing work.
  • The walls should be absolutely even: check this at the openings. This is the only way to avoid voids after installing the casing.
  • If the wallpaper is glued, then they should overlap the opening by 10 - 20 mm.
  • Platband thickness - up to 8 mm. The distance from the floor to the wall should be less than this value.

The rules are simple, but will avoid many problems when installing the door.
